Immediate Past District Governor Wayne Westlund

Email: westy1@gra.midco.net

I was born in Greenbush, MN on Aug. 9, 1936, the oldest of four sons born to Victor and Florence Westlund.  I was raised on a farm and graduated from Greenbush High School in 1954.  I served on active duty with the United States Navy from 1954 until 1957.  After separating from the Navy I enrolled at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND from which I received my undergraduate degree from the College of Business and Public Administration in 1961 and my law degree from the Law School in 1964.  I served as civilian legal counsel with the Judge Advocate General Corps of the United States Air Force for over 31 years.  I retired in October 1997.  From 1998 until 2003 I delivered new buses which were built in Pembina, ND and Crookston, MN all over the United States and Canada.  For the past four years I have been employed by Grand Forks County as the County Public Administrator.

I have been married to my wife Dorothy since June 1, 1963.  We have been blessed with four children.  David of Carrollton, TX.  Brian of Grand Forks, ND.  Kevin of Houston, TX and Kari of Bemidji, MN.  We have four granddaughters, two grandsons and two step-grand sons.  Much of my non-working hours were spent umpiring softball and baseball at both the amateur and college levels.  I have been a scoreboard operator for the UND football team for twenty three years.  I am currently the timer for both UND football and mens basketball.  I also enjoy golfing.

I have been a Lion since 1998 and have served as director, vice president, president and zone chairman.  I have been selected as Lion of the Year in 2004-2005 and 2007-2008.  I have been fortunate enough to have attended the USA/Canada Form in Columbus, OH in 2006 and the 2008 one in Saskatoon.  I also attended the recent Great Plains Lions Leadership Institute in Leavenworth,KS.

South Dakota Representative

Immediate Past District Governor Doug Scheller

Email: rxdoug@rushmore.com

Doug was born and raised in Arlington, SD where he graduated from high school in 1966.  He attended South Dakota State University and graduated in 1971 with a BS in pharmacy.  Following a year of internship in St. Paul, MN, he entered the US Army as a pharmacy officer.  After officer training in Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX he was assigned as the Chief of Pharmacy Services at Ft. McClellan, AL from May 1973 thru July 1974.  He then volunteered for overseas duty and served as the Pharmacy Officer for 3 medical clinics in the southern area of the Heidelberg Medical department of activities.  While in Germany he earned a Master of Science in Business Administration from Boston University in their overseas program.  He returned to the US in August 1977 and worked as a civilian pharmacist at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, CO and from there transitioned to the VA medical center in Denver after one year.  He remained at the VA for 4 years as a staff and a supervisory pharmacist.  During this time he was active in the Army reserves.  Doug and his family moved to Rapid City, SD in 1982 where they established The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy which they owned and operated until July 2006 when they sold their business.  Doug continues to work part time as a pharmacist.

Doug and his wife Donna have been married for 36 years.  They have 2 children, Chad a physician living in Cincinnati, OH and Jessica, an attorney, lives in Chicago.  Both children are married and both of their spouses share their professions—needless to say, we don’t discuss malpractice at the dinner table.  At this writing there are no grandchildren but there is one on the way!  Doug and Donna enjoy golf, skiing, cooking, travelling, hunting, fly fishing (please excuse Donna from the last 2), and spending time with family and friends.  Doug and Donna have been active members of the Canyon Lake United Methodist Church and were recently honored for teaching Sunday school for the last 25 years.

Doug became a Lion in 2003 when he joined the Rushmore Lions and has served in all the leadership positions in the club.  He is on the Board of Directors for the SD Lions foundation and is a Melvin Jones Fellow through his participation in CSFII.  He is especially honored to serve as VDG in support of DG Ken Gifford who is a close personal friend and his sponsor into the Rushmore Lions Club.  Doug is eager to build on the momentum 5SW has achieved in recent years and looks forward to the challenge!

Saskatchewan Representative

Immediate Past District Governor Ron Ewles

Email: ronewles@sasktel.net

Lion Ron Ewles was born and raised in Brampton, Ontario. Shortly after he married Carol, 44 years ago, life’s adventures began with a move to Winnipeg, and a few years later to Saskatoon. Ron and Lion Carol have 3 adult children, son Don and his wife Margot, and daughters Susan and Jennifer. They love traveling, and, with their family, have explored 9 Canadian Provinces, 44 of the 50 U.S. States, and have found new adventures everywhere, including walking on a glacier in Alberta, mining for diamonds in Arkansas, and a mid-July snowball fight in Alaska.

Lion Ron is a “mostly-retired” computer software consultant with over 40 years in information technology, designing and developing financial and manufacturing software. Ron is a former Mayor of Martensville, Saskatchewan and served as Chairman of the Martensville Police Commission. Ron was active in the Saskatoon business community, and served a term as President of the Saskatoon Business Promotion Club. When he’s not busy with the Lions Club, Ron enjoys golf, hunting, fishing and tournament poker.

Lion Ron is a Charter Member of the Martensville Saskatchewan Lions Club, with 18 years of Lions service. Ron has belonged to Lions Clubs in Martensville and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, as well as Welland and Burlington, Ontario. He has filled most club executive positions during that time, and has received 100% President and 100% Secretary awards and the Key Member award.

Ron has held a number of positions on the 5CN District Cabinet, including Zone Chairman, Deputy District Governor, Regional Chairman, Lioness Liaison Co-Chairman, Information Technology Chairman and Director of the Saskatchewan Lions Eye Bank. During three years as Lioness Liaison Co-Chairpersons, Lions Ron and Carol helped start 12 new Lioness Clubs. While serving as Deputy District Governor, Ron was presented with the 5CN Deputy District Governor of the Year Award.

In the west, Lions Ron and Carol have attended most District 5CN and several Multiple District 5 conventions. In Ontario, they joined the fun at Districts A4, A7 and Multiple District A conventions. In 2008, they had the opportunity to participate in the Great Plains Lions Leadership Institute in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Lions Ron believes it’s “FUN TO BE A LION”, and plans to introduce his own form of zaniness wherever he goes.

The Adventure Continues!
